    Australia's Anti-Homophobia Ads Are Awesome, A Long Way Off For America

    A new anti-homophobia ad has come out in Australia and it made me tear up a little bit.

    Here’s a tissue. Let’s talk about it.

    No To Homophobia is a new campaign in Australia to educate the LGBTQ community and their allies about discrimination and harassment and the laws in place to prevent it. The ads include workplace, school, and sport harassment examples, but also extend to ”employment and employment-related areas, education, where goods and services are provided, land sales and transfers, accommodation, clubs, sport and local government.”

    The campaign focuses on harassment in Victoria, but No To Homophobia:

    sends the message to all Australians that homophobic, transphobic and biphobic harassment are never acceptable, and that those who experience unlawful harassment have official avenues to respond to it, including the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission and the police, which can result in consequences for perpetrators.

    But these ads aren’t just suggesting we shame the people who harass us; they’re calling upon us to actually report that discrimination to the police as a crime, and implying that there will be consequences for the harasser if they do so.

    Had a discussion recently about a radscum harassing a trans* woman at work only yesterday with a Melbourne woman. Glad to see trans and bi folks in the ads.

    Most white feminists look at me disdainfully when I recount some of my choice violent moments. They are appalled, morally repelled by this unbecoming behavior. One even giggled, holding her breastbone ever so lightly and saying she’s not the violent type, blah blah blah. The messages are, 1) I’m educated and you’re not, 2) I’m upper class and you’re not, 3) I’m a feminist and you’re not (since her brand of feminism is equated with nonviolent moon-to-uterus symbiosis). My “men” can do the fighting, but I, gentle maiden, shan’t; the new feminism remaking a generation in the image of the suburban, wealthy, sophisticated, genetically genteel. No one protected me when a loved one cracked my head on a public street one might, not even the college educated Upper West Side white women strolling by pretending not to notice. I don’t like getting hit either, but what are you gonna do when someone grabs your tits? Meekly whisper you won’t stoop to your attackers level? and what level is that exactly? if that’s the way “women” react, how do we classify the elderly Filipinas on a subway train who, when Joe Dickwad grabbed my ass, congratulated me for whacking him as hard as I could, screaming obscenities, and chasing him - to his utter shock and dismay - through the station? They were the few who seemed to acknowledge, respect, and allow for “aggressive” forms of resistance instead of strapping on moral straightjackets for the nineties which we “women” must squeeze into. If that’s a woman, I’m not one. I am an animal who eats, sleeps, fucks, and fights voraciously - I assume a “good” woman does it gently and in the missionary position only.

    Men are not the victims of sexism. It is impossible for a man to be the victim of sexism. Just like it’s impossible for a white person to be the victim of racism. Reverse sexism and reverse racism are words invented by white men to label anyone who questions their power and unconscious desire to crap all over minorities and women. Next we’re going to have “When is it International Men’s Day?” - the answer: every day. “When is it white history month?” - every month. Grow up. Your loss of entitlement doesn’t mean you’re the victim of sexism.

    There’s a poisonous double standard in our society which says that it’s reverse-sexist and wrong for women to feel threatened by creepy-awkward male behaviour because our fear implies that we hold the negative, stereotypical view that All Men Are Predators, but that if we’re raped or sexually assaulted by any man with whom we’ve had prior social interaction – and particularly if he’s expressed some sexual or romantic interest in us during that time – it’s reasonable for observers to ask what precautions we took to prevent the assault from happening, or to suggest that we maybe led the guy on by not stating our feelings plainly. The result is a situation where women are punished if we reject, avoid or identify creepy men, and then told it’s our fault if we’re assaulted by someone we plainly ought to have rejected, avoided, identified.

    Feminism is a word that – to me – stands for the proposition that sexism sucks; that what’s between our legs doesn’t dictate who we are or what we can do; that women are unfairly disadvantaged in our society; and that we should be actively working to change all that. I’m not gonna back away from a word that means all that.

    The reason that people object to “feminist” but not “equalist” isn’t that “equalist” is a better word. It’s that no one knows what equalism stands for.

    But what would happen if all feminists decided that “feminist” was a bad word, and switched to “equalist”? Within a month, all the right-wingers who have worked so hard at making feminism a swear word would re-aim their guns at “equalist.” Whatever the word is that means “our status quo sucks, it hurts all of us but women especially, and it’s gotta change,” that word will be reviled.
